The North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO)

چکیده
NACLO (North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad) is an annual Olympiad-style contest for high school students, focusing on linguistics, computational linguistics, and language technologies. The goal of NACLO is to increase participation in these fields by introducing them before students reach college. Since these subjects are not normally taught in high school, we do not expect students to have any background of these areas before the contest. The contest consists of self-contained problems that can be solved with analytical thinking, but in the course of solving each problem, the students learn something about a language, culture, linguistic phenomenon, or computational tool. The winners of NACLO are eligible to participate in the International Linguistics Olympiad as part of the US team.

Introducing Computational Concepts in a Linguistics Olympiad
Linguistics olympiads, now offered in more than 20 countries, provide secondary-school students a compelling introduction to an unfamiliar field. The North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO) includes computational puzzles in addition to purely linguistic ones. This paper explores the computational subject matter we want to convey via NACLO, as well as some of the challenges tha...

NiBr2 Catalyst for the Oxidation of Alcohols and Aldehydes using NaClO: Kinetic Studies
By exposing to NaClO aqueous solution (commercial bleach), NiBr2 is transformed quantitatively into an insoluble nickel oxide hydroxide species. This compound contains large surface area and is a beneficial heterogeneous catalyst for oxidizing numerous organic materials. The oxidation of aldehydes and primary alcohols to carboxylic acids and secondary alcohols to ketones is showed wi...

The Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO) started in 2008 in only two locations and has since grown to a nationwide competition with almost 1500 high school students participating in 2013. An Australian team has participated in the International Linguistics Olympiad (ILO) every year since 2009. This paper describes how the competition is run (with a regional First Round and ...
متن کاملManifest Destiny and American Identity in Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian
McCarthy scholarship has predominantly tended to stress the writer’s revisionism with regard to his rendering of the myth of the American West in Blood Meridian (1985). McCarthy’s novel has beenmainlyhailed as a critique of the violence of manifest destiny. This study aims to delineate aspects of McCarthy’s narrative which resist the predominant view of him as a revisionist. In this re...
